Kumkum Bhattacharyya

Former post-doctoral scholar

Kumkum Bhattacharyya’s dissertation research at the University of Burdwan (India) on the impounded Damodar River, a subsystem of the Ganga River, whose water infrastructure was modelled on the Tennessee Valley Authority.  As a post-doctoral scholar in UCB’s Riverlab 2002-2003, she worked on sediment management in aging reservoirs.  Kumkum is interested in the ‘age-old dance between humans and rivers’ and the ‘hybrid landscapes’ that result from human interventions.  She has published two books, one on the Damodar River, and another on reservoir sedimentation, drawing heavily on examples in India.
